Who We Are

Mount Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is a congregation within the Lower Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We are a congregation of varied interests, talents and needs, located in an expanding suburban/rural township, uniquely uniting the new and the old, tradition and change, in a living commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are a congregation that affirms both the Bible as the Word of God and the writings of the Lutheran Confessions as the expression of our doctrine and belief.

As a church, we are called by God to gather around His Word and to share in His presence. We experience God’s presence through the Word proclaimed, the Sacraments of Baptism and Communion administered, and the fellowship of faith.

Mt. Zion Lutheran Church is enthusiastic to partner with other local Houses of Worship for community events and activities. For example, we join with Mt. Zion UCC in York for our Cut-n-Peel outreach and Christ Lutheran Church in Starview to create Personal Care Kits and School Kits for Lutheran World Relief.

Where We’ve Come From

Mount Zion’s beginning goes back to 1844 when farmers in the area met in various homes to worship and hear the preaching of Reverend Martin, a Lutheran minister. Within a few years, a Reformed pastor was added to the ministry. By the cooperative efforts of the Lutheran and Reformed parishioners, the first Mount Zion Church was built with the cornerstone for the wooden structure laid in 1851. Later in 1890, a new and larger brick structure was built. The bell from this church now rests in front of our present building.

During the first century of Mount Zion’s life, most members were native York Countians, but with the influx of businesses and industry, new families moved into the area, swelling Mount Zion’s congregation. It was during this period that the Reformed congregation separated and moved into its own building on Ridgewood Road with its own ministry.

On July 24, 1966, the Lutheran congregation dedicated its new and present building to better serve the spiritual needs of the changing congregation and community.

We celebrated the 150th anniversary of our church with a special anniversary service held on October 28, 2001.
